My Problem

Many users in Ubiquity forums complain about dead or bloated batterys when units are out of warranty. So do I. Units become hot and work unstable. During a power loss the Cloud Key does not do a safe shut down. Changing the battery is a little nightmare because you have to disassemble the complete unit. Why does this company not solve this with a revison flap like changing the harddrive ? It can be done in a very userfriendly way with opening the harddrive caddy and you are done.

Next problem is the formfactor of this 7.4 V battery. It seems to be a special size I did not found in any online shop. Only this battery model fits in battery bay. And the battery is situatet under the CPU which can become very hot.

My Fix

I found a suitable 7.4 V battery, 280 mAh in a shop that deales with remote controlled model aircrafts.

The challange was how to mount the battery inside the case beacuse its diameter is thicker.

I do not explain how to disassemble the Cloud Key. There a some good videos at youtube.

After some size tests I found out the only way is to store the battery in the harddrive caddy.

Beacuse I replaced the harddrive with a SSD I mounted it without its 2.5" housing. That gives me the space I needed for storing the battery inside the case.

My Advice

Get yourself a multi lead cable (3 lines), mount one end it in the vicinity of the board´s battery socket and solder the original battery connector. You have to loosen the mainboard to find a way leading the cable in a good position. The other end will be soldered to the battery. Let some cable hang out in the front opening where the caddy is located.

Now assemble the unit. The final step is soldering the battery to the cable. Use shrink tube to isolate all solderings.

Finally some information concerning formatting the SSD. In my experience fomating is not necessary. It will be auto initialized.
