"It only boots up when connected to the charge cable" is key.
This means that your battery is not connected--which may explain most of your other problems. Hopefully, you just need to reseat the battery, but it is very common to actually tear a solder connection of the battery connector to the motherboard---can be repaired, but you may wish to seek a professional.
The dark LCD is most likely not connected properly, or the connector is damaged. Take a look carefully at the connector under magnification, clean the connector, and try again. The original problem (blocks at top) is also caused by a connector misfit.
You can try connecting the old screen lcd only and not worrying about the digitizer.
