If the buttons are difficult to press there could be debris inside the case, beneath the buttons that is causing the difficulties. Power off the device before removing the back with a spunger or similar tool. Be careful not to damage the casing of the device. The volume button assembly will be in the top left corner. Use a clean brush of some sort, possibly including an unused toothbrush, to clear away any debris. While the case is open make sure the buttons are loose, but not detached.
