The HDD light slowly fading may just mean that it has finished being used for whatever reason and is not required at the moment, e.g. startup processes have been completed perhaps and nothing else has been requested by either OS admin tasks or user input.
Did you try pressing Fn + F7 to check if the screen turns on, you didn’t say?

With an external display connected did you try pressing Fn + F8 to toggle the video output between the laptop display, the external display and both displays on together, you didn’t say?

Try shining a torch at an angle close to the screen to check if you can detect an image at all when the laptop has booted. It will be very faint so try this in a darkened room to help see it if it is there or not.
''If you can detect an image'' you have a backlight problem. This could be caused by a faulty display panel, a faulty cable or cable connection between the display panel and the motherboard or a faulty motherboard backlight power supply circuit.
''If you cannot detect an image'' then it could be a faulty display panel, a faulty cable or cable connection between the display panel and the motherboard or a faulty motherboard.
You can’t access BIOS at startup, with an external screen connected to the motherboard’s VGA or HDMI ports as the OS needs to be loaded to enable this to happen.
The problem with the screen has to be resolved first.
