While it may sound silly, this is the same first step I would ensure with anyone else - try unplugging the cable and reconnecting it again, this time visually confirming the head of the jack is completely in. I’ve seen it happen multiple times where they feel like they are all the way in but are just a smidge out of place.[br]

Being a brand new laptop and previously working headphones, without any other info I would first try that.
