Why can I not clone the hard drive?

I have 2 iMac G4s, one 15-inch, and the other 17-inch, I need to clone one of their hard drives to make the other one work. I have a USB HDD converter. When I go to disk utility and copy the hard drive, I very soon am greeted with an error saying that this task is impossible. Does anyone know what might be the cause of such a malfunction?
