Outside of sounds coming from the laptop as Lynx has suggested, the best diagnostic would be to plug in an external monitor. If that works it confirms that your graphics subsystem is working fine and the problem is with the LCD itself. Otherwise it could be a power or motherboard/GPU issue. If you don't have a monitor, you can plug it into a standard television using an HDMI cable.
