My car won't start

Hi,

I am a new member as of 5 minutes ago. I have two Honda CRV's. My 2016 CRV does not start. It turns over but seams to be gasping for fuel. My first thought was the fuel pump was going bad. I tapped on the top of the fuel pump housing and the engine started but ran only a minute or two. It lacked power and struggled to stay on. I think the tapping of the fuel housing to get the engine started was not the fix because later I checked the 4 wires going into the connector at the top of the fuel housing and there was no dc voltage. Plus I never could hear the pump turn on. Therefore, I checked the 15 vamp fuse inside the car near the steering column and it is good. I can't find the fuel relay. I think this may be the problem. Does anyone know where the relay is? I have looked behind the glove box and under the dash in the steering column area. Once I find the relay can I test it or swap it with another like relay used on this car or should I buy a new one hoping it is bad? Any help would be appreciated. I like to learn and fix things myself.

John

@cadwelll ,casey, Did a search for the 2016 and did not find much info. Is this vehicle still under warranty and if so should not the dealer fix this issue for you.

Found this info. at the first link below, on the older CRV's the fuel pump is controlled by the PGM-FI main relays and there are two relays located next to the ecm under the glove box(see 1st link below). Also if you have a UK version CRV there may be a fuel shut off/safety switch located under the dash, steering coloumn area(see 2nd link). There also could be a failed sensor causing issue and having the vehicle scanned could bring up an error code leading to fault. Some of the auto parts suppliers offer free code reading like Pepboys, Nappa, Advanced auto parts, etc and some of the guys are very knowledgeable and may have seen the issue often and put you on the right track.

Good luck. I hope this helped you out, if so let me know by pressing the helpful button.

Lpfaff,

Thank you for your research and answers. My car is out of warranty. It was stolen and therefore has a salvaged title. No damage was done except to the sun roof. I found the same information you mentioned and the relays behind the glove box area are not there. Also the fuel shut off switch or inertia switch is nowhere to be found. I will tow the car to the shop today. We live about 1 hour from town therefore I was hoping to fix on my own.

Thanks again!

Casey

@cadwelll , Casey,Thanks for replying back, just a thought, since it had been stolen is there a chance the security system is on and requires reset or damage to ignition/wires. Good luck with your CRV.

Recently my 2016 CRV wouldn't start. Two hours later it started right up. Ran for about a week and two days ago wouldn't start again. So had it jumped. It turned over just fine but would shut off right away….tried this several times and it would just shutdown. My neighbor is the GM at a very large AUTO complex and he called the manager of the Honda maintenance and he suggested that I use my spare key. And bingo…car started and stayed on. Seems its the memory chip in the key that is messed up. However I have also learned that there’s a battery in the key and it might be that. So I will install a new battery and if it doesn't work will see about what it takes to reprogram the chip in the key. Good luck!
