Sticky L & R Buttons?

The L & R buttons on the 2ds xl are kinda sticky/mushy, if i were to open it up, how would i go about cleaning them?

Options

Damp a paper towel and wipe them. Do under it too make sure it does not drip water or it will ruin it. After done dry it
