Background and Identification

A breast pump is a device that women who are lactating use to extract milk from their breasts. There are several types: manual ones in which you must use your hands to squeeze a lever to extract the milk, as well as automatic pumps powered by electricity or batteries.

The first breast pump was patented in 1854. Between 1921 and 1923 a mechanical pump was invented by Chess Master Edward Lasker.

There are two types of electric breast pumps, hospital grade and personal use. Hospital-grade pumps are made for multiple users and are larger. Personal use pumps are intended for one user. They are both powered by a motor and connect to plastic tubing which connects to plastic bottles that collect the milk.

Parts that are prone to breakage are the tubing, flanges, and the motor itself.
