Background

The cystoscope is a device that allows a doctor to perform a cystoscopy —an examination of the lining of the bladder. The cystoscope is inserted up the urethra to the bladder.

A patient may require local or general anesthesia depending on the procedure, whether a flexible or rigid cystoscope is used, and if surgery is being performed.

Identification

The cystoscope is a hollow tube equipped with a camera, lens, and light on the end. Depending on the procedure, the cystoscope may be rigid or flexible. They come in different sizes and also vary in thickness.
