Revision to Fujifilm FinePix S4800

Stephen Calabrese

Nice little 30X zoom bridge camera that suffers from a lens that is prone to jam when dropped. Lens is deep in the camera and once you extract it, there is not much you can do to free it as it is a sealed system. Only a smooth barrel and a gear at the base. If you cannot turn the gear with your hands, there is no way the little screw drive motor will be able to.
-Disassembly is straight forward, a few screws around the perimeter of the clamshell construction (al l the same size) and 3 under the flash unit that can be extended manually without battery power. Once you seperate the clamshell with a spudger, there is an LCD and the only PCB board under it. The PCB is soldered to a daughterboard that is perpendicular to it on top, a strange design that has to be unsoldered to remove to get to the lens screws underneath. Once removed, there are 4 large head phillips screws that hold the lens/CMOS assy to the front case. Once these are removed, the lens comes out as a unit. The motor swings away and then you can cycle the gear at the base to manually extend the lens. If it is jammed, your only option is to physically pry the outer barrel off the helical tracks at the 5 bearing points around the barrel, a likely destructive procedure.
