Background and Identification

The Nellcor (or Puritan Bennett) 840 is a ventilator that allows patients to experience easier and more natural breathing.

This model is the second most recent ventilator (2001) that Puritan Bennett has produced compared to the 980 model (2016). The 980 model advertises enhancements in safety, user-friendliness, and overall design elements.

Below is a rough timeline (newest to oldest) of the Puritan Bennet ventilator series:

  • 980 model
  • 840 model
  • 700 series
  • 7200 series
  • 560 series
  • Bennett MA-1
  • Bennett TV-2P and Bennett PR-2

The intended users of this device are those who work in the medical field and use equipment like this daily for their patients.

A used device costs up to $12,000 or more.

The 840 model was recalled in 2013, but only to correct the labeling for the operational life of the oxygen sensor. There were no other complications with the device.

You can identify this device by observing the unique shape of the screen and the button panel attached to the upper right corner. The other models do not look like this. There is an attached document that outlines all the accessories for the 840 (and the 980).
