Background and Identification

A spectrophotometer is a device that measures light’s intensity (or number of photons) absorbed after it passes through a solution. Using a spectrophotometer, you can determine the amount of a known chemical substance by measuring the intensity of the light detected.

There are two types of spectrophotometer and this depends on the range of wavelength of the light source.

UV-visible spectrophotometer: uses light over the ultraviolet range (185 - 400 nm) and visible range (400 - 700 nm) of electromagnetic radiation

IR spectrophotometer: uses light over the infrared range (700 - 15000 nm) of electromagnetic radiation spectrum (Chemistry Libretexts)

Spectrophotometers are used in a wide variety of scientific fields including Physics, Molecular Biology, Chemistry, Biochemistry, Chemical Engineering and Materials Science.
