The chain transfers the power of your pedaling feet to the rear wheel. When your chain is damaged or not working properly it can make your ride extremely difficult or you may not be able to ride at all. Your chain could be stretched or bent. This guide will walk you through the steps of properly removing your chain and installing a new one.
Identify the master link on your bicycle chain, push the ends of the master link together and the link will disconnect, it may require a lot of force. If you have done this, skip step 2. If you cannot find one, your chain may not have one.
If you do not have a master link on your chain, use the chain breaker to separate any two links of the chain.
Arrange the chain in the chain breaker so the connector aligns with the press.
Slowly tighten the screw until the connector begins to slide out of the link. DO NOT push the connector all the way out.
DO NOT push the connector all the way out, only enough to separate the links. This is essential in reconstructing your chain without purchasing a master link.
Now that you have your old chain off, you can either clean it or replace it. If you replace the chain make sure you buy the correct length and size!
Connect the ends of the masterlink and pull, it should snap into place. If not, place the master link above the rear gear, hold the rear tire in place, and give the pedal a push. The stress on the chain should snap the master link into place.
