Introduction
This guide shows how to remove the console and front bulkhead on a newer style GE front-load washing machine. Doing so provides access to internal components like the motor, drain pump, or door lock. The top panel on these models is different because there are no screws at the rear, so follow these instructions closely.
What you need
-
Step 1 Remove the dispenser drawer and screws
-
Pull the dispenser drawer fully out and press the rear tab to release it.
-
Remove the five screws from the dispenser housing using a magnetic tip screwdriver.
-
Be aware that the two middle screws can easily re-thread themselves if not fully removed.
-
-
Step 2 Detach the console from the washer
-
Lift the left edge of the console slightly and push it to the right to free it.
-
Confirm all dispenser screws are removed or they may block console movement.
-
-
Step 3 Remove the top panel for access
-
Locate and remove the three small screws on the top of the washing machine behind the console area.
-
Slide the top panel forward and lift it away to expose the machine’s interior.
-
Remove or loosen wire ties with pliers or disconnect the console harness for more slack if needed.
-
-
Step 4 Detach the door boot and remove the door lock facade
-
Use a small screwdriver to pry off the outer door spring and peel the boot edge away.
-
Remove two screws securing the plastic facade on the door lock side.
-
Unscrew the two screws underneath the facade to free the door lock from the bulkhead.
-
-
Step 5 Remove the front bulkhead
-
Remove about nine screws along the top and sides of the bulkhead, including near the dispenser area.
-
Loosen three additional screws from underneath by slightly tilting the machine if necessary.
-
Unclip the air baffle by removing its three screws and slide it away from the bulkhead.
-
Disconnect the hidden wire harness on the left side before pulling the bulkhead forward.
-
-
Step 6 Reinstall the front bulkhead
-
Reconnect the wire harness on the left side behind the bulkhead before positioning it.
-
Lift the bulkhead above the chassis and lower it onto the plastic mounts.
-
Align the blower fan part of the door boot with the slots on the bulkhead and secure them.
-
Reinstall all bulkhead screws, working from the outside edges in toward the center.
-
-
Step 7 Reinstall the door boot and lock
-
Fit the door lock into position on the bulkhead and secure it with two screws.
-
Place the plastic facade over the lock and attach it with two more screws.
-
Pull the door boot onto the metal lip of the bulkhead, ensuring a tight channel fit.
-
Use a suitable method like a wrench or zip ties to reinstall the large door boot spring.
-
-
Step 8 Reassemble the top panel and console
-
Reseat the top panel onto the washer and secure it with the three screws along the upper edge.
-
Align the console with the two flat-head screws on the right side and lower it in place.
-
Push the console left until it snaps fully and locks into position.
-
Reinstall the five dispenser housing screws, noting that two middle screws are larger.
-
Slide the dispenser drawer back in until the rear tab clicks securely.
-
This completes the disassembly and reassembly of the console and front bulkhead. You now have access to key internal components and can perform necessary repairs on your GE front-load washing machine.
