If speakers or headphones that you plug into your Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon (2nd Gen) do not produce any audio, use this guide to replace the USB audio port board.

The USB audio port board transmits audio and information from your computer to any devices that you plug into the headphone jack or USB port.

Before using this guide, check to see if there is any dust or debris in the headphone jack. Use canned air to remove anything you find. Also, try using a few different headphones/speakers. This can confirm that there is a problem with the USB audio port board and not the headphones/speaker.

Before you begin, make sure your computer is off.

What you need

Tools

  1. Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon (2nd Gen) USB Audio Port Board Replacement, Back Cover: step 1, image 1 of 1
    • Using a Phillips #0 screwdriver, remove the seven 7mm screws holding the back cover onto your computer.

    • Use a plastic opening tool or your fingers to pry off the cover.

    • Using your fingers, disconnect the battery from the motherboard.

    • Using a Phillips #0 screwdriver, unscrew the five 4.3mm screws attaching the battery to the computer.

    • Remove the battery by pulling it directly towards you.

    • Use a Phillips #0 screwdriver to remove the 2.9 mm screw that is holding down the USB audio port board.

    • Undo the clasp under the USB audio port board.

  8. Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon (2nd Gen) USB Audio Port Board Replacement: step 8, image 1 of 1
    • Remove the USB audio port board from the laptop.
