What you need

Close the lid, disconnect the power and turn the PowerBook over so the battery bay faces you.

Press the button on the battery in and slide the cover to the right.

Pull the battery towards you, making sure not to break the cover.

Turn the laptop over so the empty battery bay faces you.

Use a T8 torx bit to remove the four (4) 8mm torx screws on the bottom case.

Rotate the PowerBook so the the rear ports are facing you.

Use an Opening Pick to pry the leg caps off.

Using aT8 torx bit, remove loosen the screws (and spring washers) and remove both legs.

Flip the PowerBook over.

Using a Spudger, pry the hinge caps away from the screen. They may require a bit of force, but will slide off.

Once the plastic caps are off, remove the 8mm hinge screws and metal shield with aT8 torx bit.

Flip the PowerBook over and open the screen.

Gently lift the keyboard up using a plastic Spudger to expose the two ribbon cables.

Use the spudger to loosen the clips on each side of the connectors and disconnect the ribon cables.

Set the keyboard aside.

Using a plastic Spudger and bracing against the metal screen hinge, push the top of the case toward you while prying up, loosening the top case from the back of the assembly.

Using a plastic Spudger, disconnect the trackpad ribon cable from the system board.

There is a plastic clip located in the front left of the battery bay. Release this clip and the top case will come free.

Lift the top case off and set aside.

Using a plastic Spudger, disconnect the LCD connector from the system board.

The LCD cable is clipped to the chasis. To release it, pull the cable towards you and lift up.

The rear port covers are connected to the panel assembly. Push back on the two tabs to the right, left and center of the display to release it.

Lift off the display assembly and set aside.

Using a plastic Spudger, pry the HDD connector cable off the system board. Insert it between the board and the connector, and twist, loosening the connector.

Carefully disconnect the CMOS battery from the system board and lift it out.

Remove the three (3) torx screws from the HDD holder using a T8 torx bit.

Fold back the shielding towards you.

Lift the HDD out of the case by tilting towards you.

Remove the 4 philips screws to release the HDD from the mounting brackets with a#1 Philips bit.

Set the rails asside.

Carefully loosen the ribbon cable from the drive with the point of a plastic Spudger by working it into a grove in between the connector and the drive.

The RAM is located to the bottom right of the system board.

Find the two notches on the circuit board.

Loosen the RAM chip with the tip of a plastic Spudger. Insert the Spudger into the notch and gently coax the chip out of the socket by pulling toward the right, alternating from the top and bottom notches.

With a T8 torx bit, remove the two (2) torx screws from the top of the metal frame.

With a T8 torx bit, remove the two (2) torx screws that connect the battery terminal.

Make sure both cables from the CMOS battery and the display sleep switch are disconnected from the system board.

Unseat the microphone from the metal frame by pulling directly up and out.
-
Lift the frame out of the case, tilting away from you.
-

Lift the board away from the copper shieling by tilting away from you.
-

-
Once the board has been removed from the bottom case, disconnecting the modem is easy. Simply remove the modem board from the connector by pulling gently to the right.
