[title|Vacuum Brushes Not Spinning]
[summary]Your vacuum has brushes that are supposed to spin and help lift dirt from the carpet or floor. But you don't hear that familiar whirring sound. and when you take a look, they don't turn. What is causing this? How do you sort it out? We will get you there.[/summary]

== The Easy Checks ==

There are some simple checks that you can start with to point you in the right direction, and can save you hours.

* Does your vacuum have a hard floor setting that shuts off the brush rolls. If so make sure it isn't turned on.
* Is the pile long on your carpet? Check the setting on your vacuum and make sure it isn't set to a low pile setting. The brushes can be overwhelmed in those circumstances and won't spin.
* Are your vacuum brushes on a separate vacuum brush head with a hose attached?
** On central vacs and canister models, motor driven brushes will often have a cord that runs down the wand to the brush head. Is the motor running still? Has the cord come unplugged?
** Air turbine driven brushes won't have the cord, and will frequently be smaller. They are less powerful than motor driven brushes and can be stopped more easily.
** Air turbine driven brushes are also affected by a plugged hose, they will stop much more easily when there is a clog in the vacuum hose.
* Check to see if your carpet is loose. It may have stretched since installation, or was improperly stretched at installation. The vacuum can suck loose carpet into the brushes which will stop them. If the carpet clings to your vacuum when you try to lift it that's a sign of this condition.
* On some canister vacuums, the brush roll may have an overload reset button. Check to see if it is tripped and reset it.

== The Drive Belt Is Broken ==

This is the most common problem that you will encounter. It isn't hard in most cases to check. If it's broken, you need to replace it, but the key is to work on figuring out why it broke if possible.
