On all modern cell phones the digitizer, or touch screen, is bonded to the LCD display so in order to fix either one you have to replace the complete assembly. It sounds as though your digitizer has failed, and the fix for a malfunctioning digitizer is generally to replace the screen. iFixit, unfortunately, doesn't have a guide to that repair, but I found other sites that do.

On your phone, similar to the Samsung phones, there are two ways to replace the screen. The first, and recommended way, is to replace the screen plus frame as a single assembly; that way the screen comes preattached to the frame so it's generally more secure and most likely more water resistant. The downside to this method is that you have to basically gut the phone and transfer all of the internal components to the new screen+frame assembly. On the other hand, Xiaomi makes this procedure rather straight-forward so it's really not as difficult as it might sound. The French site SOSav has a guide showing you how to replace the entire assembly.

Of course, the guide is written in French, but if you use it together with the Chrome browser's translation feature, it is quite usable and well done. You can pick up replacement parts at a wide variety of online stores; I usually start with Amazon, eBay and AliExpress, but you'll also find many more. Due to the age of the phone and the fact that it's an LCD screen, prices are pretty inexpensive for those parts. Here's one that came up on a rather cursory search.

Over at the Spanish site Nadie Me Llama Gallina they have a guide for replacing just the screen without the frame; note that the two procedures require different sets of instructions.

This guide is written in Spanish, but again Chrome's translation makes it eminently usable. I ran across a seller on AliExpress who offers the screen both with and without a frame, so if you're looking to save money, this would be a good choice for either repair, although I would urge you to go with the screen plus frame repair, personally. The small amount of money you save on the price difference between the two will be easily taken up by having to buy a tube of B-6000 or similar glue.

As far as what caused the problem, it's hard to say. The connection between the flex cable leading to the motherboard and the glass of the digitizer is generally pretty fragile and it doesn't take much to damage or dislodge that connection, and that can happen with no visible sign of damage. It can be a result of damage such as being dropped or bumped, it can be due to liquid exposure, or it could just be age, where the bonding agent or adhesive used dries up and no longer secures the parts together.

But no matter the cause, if it's genuinely a hardware issue then replacing the screen is the only solution. Of course, you'll want to try any available software solutions such as resetting and restarting your phone, but if those don't work then you'll need to put on a new screen.

Good luck and let us know how it turns out! As you work, take lots of pictures so you can use those to create your own iFixit guide to that repair! It's easy, fun, and the community will appreciate your efforts!
