iPhone 4S No Backlight Issue

I have an old iPhone 4s that has no backlight, but if I hold it in light I can see the LCD working. I have tried restoring in iTunes and replacing the screen. There is gunk on the capacitors near the display cable so could that be it? If so, how can I remove it without knocking the components off the board? The previous owner had it sitting in a closet for years, so dust and gunk could have accumulated then.

EDIT: I don’t know what I did, but now the backlight turns on for a second showing the Apple logo, but then turns off again and won’t illuminate
