simply press the home and the sleep button at the same time until the phone restarts - this should take around 10 seconds

You should hold down the home screen button and the top lock button together , KEEP HOLDING EVEN WHEN IT SAYS TURN OFF, KEEP HOLDING UNTIL THE APPLE APPEARS ,then release both buttons and wait for the phone to reboot. Sometimes it take a minute or so.
