The lense cover that opens when powering up is broken. How do I replace just the cover piece? When I power down, the lense doesn't retract all the way to a flat view.

@cool555 i recognize this as an old question. Answering it just for completion sake.
This sounds like a broken lens. You do want to go ahead and remove it and inspect it. Most likely you will have to replace it since parts for these lenses are very difficult to obtain. Use this guide Nikon COOLPIX S9500 Lens Replacement to work on your camera.
