What can I do to stop what sounds like a on and off again humming noise?

Your frigidaire is a refrigerator? Is the humming noise once every hour or so with the thermostat cycle? Or much more frequently while it is running? A model might help narrow down your repair options.

See if you can determine if the noise is coming from the front or back to help isolate the problem. How well is it cooling, how old is it, when was the last time you cleaned the coils?
