Why is my laptop overheating?

My HP G71t-300 overheats with casual use (internet browsing, word documents, etc.).

How can I fix this?

It sounds like you may have a problem with your fans or heat sinks. Thetroubleshooting page for this device actually has suggestions for this exact problem.

Look up a way to replace or clean your fan. Maybe there's a guide on how to fix it somewhere online?

Have you ever used it on a bed or other cloth. If so the heatsink is clogged with lint and the fan will run on high. If you don't hear fan noise then the fan could have failed and needs replaced. Either way it will require taking it apart. Might as well replace the thermal paste while it's apart.
