Repair guides and disassembly information for laptops manufactured by ASUS.

Laptop doesn't power on without charger.

I opened my laptop (vivobook s15 r542uq) to clean the fans. I unplugged keyboard and trackpad connectors and cleaned the fans and put it back together. Didn’t touch the battery. My laptop now won’t power up on battery, no lights nothing but if i would plug in the charger, it boots without pressing power. If I take out the cable, it dies instantly. I opened to check once more but can’t find anything. The battery has no connectors running out of it. Help. Pics : https://imgur.com/FPsKHk9

"Didn't touch the battery."

Always take out battery before doing anything with a laptop computer.

"If I take out the cable, it dies instantly." We are hoping you didn't do this while the computer was booted up!

I only cleaned the internals. It was disconnected and powered off.

Did you double check that all cables, etc. were reconnected correctly before reassembling? Troubleshooting often is about finding the simple, obvious solution. We humans tend to think too complicately. Of that simple solution may take a bit of work to find!

With the charger disconnected I would disassemble, check as above. If all looks good then take the battery out. Remember to press the power button to discharge any power left in the system. Go off and have a cup of tea and then reinstall the battery. Plug in the charger and wait about 30 minutes. Unplug the charger and then press the power button. Does the laptop turn on?

If not replace the battery.

I'd like to try this, the issue tho is that when I plug in the charger, it boots up without pressing the power button. I have removed the battery before, but I'll try again with pressing power button and leaving it out for the night.

How did you solve it? Did you replaced the battery? I have the exact same problem with the same laptop. It was running fine before i open it for clean-up, the only difference is that i removed the battery before clean-up and now it does not power up on battery only anymore. Windows is displaying the battery when the battery is connected and it doesn't when the battery is outside, so no connection issues on that part.

There are a few steps that every person or tech typically follows so often that we tend, yes I’m guilty as well, to skip.

  1. Unplug the device
  2. Remove battery
  3. Drain residual power from device and/or Resetting CMOS , by holding down the power button (amount of time ranges depending on the device.

Your battery is dead. Replace it. And to make sure it's actually dead, try the same battery on identical laptop. And if it's comes that battery is fine then, it's the issue with the chip that identifies and manages battery in the laptop.

The battery was working normally before. How might it be dead suddenly?
