Entire agitator spinning freely both ways

The agitator in my whirlpool washer is not spinning when the washer is running. I can spin both the top and base of the agitator by hand easily both directions. Ik the top could just be the agitator dogs but I didn't think the bottom was supposed to spin also. What do I need to replace to fix it?

Thanks!

Whirlpool washer (top load model) is similar to Kenwood, which I have, except mine has a single agitator. Start by replacing the agitator dogs, and see if that fixes it. It worked for me. I got the replacement parts from Amazon. Good luck.

Hi there. I know this is an older thread, but hopefully somebody looking for answers can find it here.

Having the model number would be very helpful, but without it, I can still offer some suggestions. First, I'd recommend removing the agitator. Pull the cap the from the top of the agitator, then remove the bolt from inside the agitator. (It's usually a 7/16" bolt) then pull the agitator out and look inside it from underneath. There are plastic splines that align with and grip the metal splines on the transmission drive shaft. If those are worn off, it can cause the entire agitator to move freely in both directions. You'll need to replace the agitator.

Next, there's a big plastic gear inside the transmission. If you're ambitious, you can replace that gear if it's teeth are worn off or broken. (Look for transmission rebuild videos on YouTube)

I hope this helps.
