The Nintendo Switch is a handheld game console that can be played on the TV via a docking station, or on the go. Released March 3rd, 2017.

Switch not charging Joycons

I am having an issue with my Nintendo Switch not charging my joycons. I purchased used without joycons. I tested the unit with a pair of brand new joycons and they would not charge. I also tried a Hori D-Pad controller that I got on clearance from Target. The hori unit has no battery and can only work when docked. It not working shows the joycons are not getting any power. There is no damage to the joycon rails. The system is in good shape.

I read a few questions here and saw someone mention replacing the fan could fix this problem. I did that and it didn’t fix the problem. I do notice the console is a little warm. How noticeable is the fan spinning up? I don’t know if I really noticed it spinning up before I replaced the fan and I am certain I connected the replacement. I should also note I put some new arctic silver thermal paste on the unit when I replaced the fan. Is there anything else that can cause the unit to not charge the joycons?

The unit works fine and I can used it docked with a controler, but it would be nice to have it fully functional.

Answer this question I have this problem too

Hello,

If you’re lucky, it might just be the connector that doesn’t have a good contact, so pluging them in and out a couple of time sholt remove any corrosion left (I recommend shutting down the console before).

If you’re not that lucky, the bad connection might be between the rails and the motherboard. So you might need to replace the rails.

An alternative to that is buying a joycon charging dock (though it’s not a great alternative because it’s more like a workaround than a real fix).

Hope that helped.

Tried your suggestion, but it didn't work. Guess I'll try replacing the rails next. I do have a pro charging grip, so I can at least charge the joycons.

@Jason Everest maybe you can also try to clean the contacts with isopropyl alcohol and a Q-tip

I replaced both joy con rails, but they still fail to charge.

Did you ever find a fix to this? I am having a similar problem.
