850 G8: Add second SSD?

Anybody know if the bay is empty on an HP 850 G8 so that I can just drop a second SSD in? Thanks.

Update (11/22/2021)

I’m asking because on my boss’s G4, I found that the one bay was empty, meaning I assumed that the stock SSD was a PCIe card. According to the G8 specs, the SSD is also a PCIe card, so was wondering if there is still a bay and that it comes empty out of the box. From what you say, it sounds like that’s true and I could drop an extra SSD in there.

Thanks!

No, there is only one SSD bay on this laptop.

There is one PCIe bay that is already filled. There are no other places to add storage. In other words, you can only have one internal SSD on this computer

Hi @bgollands ,

To add to the answer, if you wish to increase storage without upgrading the SSD, then insert the highest capacity SD card that you want (or can afford) into the card reader on the left side of the laptop and leave it there.

Configure the card to be the storage drive i.e. point all your data folders i.e. Documents, Pictures, Videos etc to the card and leave the installed SSD as the OS + program drive.

The upside is that you get more storage (which is nearly as fast as an SSD) and if the laptop ever fails then your data is easily accessible without having to open the laptop. Simply remove the card. Also good security if leaving the laptop unattended in a public place for a short while e.g. a library - unmount the card and take it with you

The downsides are that anybody can remove the card but they have to know that it is there first and also if you often insert SD cards from a camera etc for easy downloading ;-)
