Lightning connector, home button not working

Hello,

My Lightning connector and home button are not working after I replaced my battery, screen, and lightning connector. The phone also shuts down about every 3 minutes.

I opened everything back up and noticed some bent pins where the lightning flex cable plugs into the logic board, so I bent them back, tested the connection by plugging it in, then unplugged it again and all of the pins looked good on both sides.

I put everything back together, and there’s no difference in performance. The panic log is as follows (note that this isn’t everything - just the first page worth. I have the full log if it is helpful):

Can anybody help me understand what might be going on? I would really like to fix this thing.

Thank you for all of your help and the information. I reinstalled the old flex and the phone worked okay, and then I reinstalled the old screen and the home button worked. Shame I wasted all that money on bad parts, but I suppose I’m happy with my repair job. I think at this point I’m probably just going to buy a used version of the phone and save the hassle.

The clue you need is on that first page, in the following line.

Missing sensor(s): mic1

@flannelist has put together a fairly definitive Wiki page on iPhone kernel panics that gives us an excellent clue as to where to look.

In the section on missing sensors, here's what it has to say about yours.

  • PRS0 and Mic1 are generally part of the charge port flex.

Basically this is saying the lightning port flex you put in is either defective or did not properly implement the mic1 sensor, but in either case it's not working. I haven't personally run into problems with an aftermarket lightning flex, but there have been several others who have. If you still have the old flex you can check to see if that's the problem just by unplugging the one that's in there and, without necessarily having to install it, plug in the old one and see if that fixes the boot loop. Note that it's possible the connector is damaged and could need to be replaced; it can be done but requires a certain amount of expertise with hot air work. Also, check the components mounted around the connector; more than one person has accidentally knocked one off when trying to get those FPC connectors plugged in.

If you don't have the old one or it's not functional enough to use, I'd suggest going ahead and ordering a new one; personally I'd just pick a different supplier, unless you can contact your original seller and let them know there's an issue with the part you got. Of course, if you bought it from iFixit it came with a lifetime warranty and will be replaced with no problem.

Getting the home button working again may be a little trickier. As near as I can figure the issue can come from three different sources. First, the home button itself could have gotten damaged in the process of removing it, in which case you're kind of S.O.L. With some luck and research you should be able to get a replacement, but the Touch ID function won't ever work again. A lot of people have reported an issue with some of the replacements where the assistive touch function constantly turns itself on.

Anyway, assuming you were able to remove the button from the old screen without issue, there are two other places to look. the button itself plugs into a flex cable on the replacement display, so it's possible there's an issue with one of the fpc connectors on either end of the display cable, or possibly a problem with the flex itself. Again, if you have the old screen you could test that out by swapping it back and seeing if that makes any difference; if it works with the old screen then you'll probably need a different screen than the one you have.

That's all I have for the moment; check out what you can and let us know what you find.

Just to add to your information, another user had to try three different home buttons on his SE 2020 before they found one that worked without constantly invoking the assistive touch. Here's the relevant answer in case you end up needing to order one.

@tegriffi Wow, Tim, that's an unusual run of bad luck getting two bad parts at once. The good news is I think we can conclude the phone is actually repairable; just have to get some better quality parts for it. If course, you can't go wrong with iFixit parts, as they focus on high quality parts and come with a lifetime warranty.

Other than that, check ratings for parts on AliExpress and eBay. I buy most of my parts from those sources and have had pretty good success with them, but I do try to do my homework.
