Fans try to spin up briefly and repeatedly, no other signs of life

Trying to work on a Series S that I got off Facebook Marketplace. I’ve taken off all the casing, and have noticed that when I plug the power cable in, the fan spins up briefly and repeatedly (I can hear the fan whirring for a moment every two seconds or so, alongside the spinning). There’s no other signs of life, power button doesn’t do anything and no video output.

I’ve checked the power supply with a multimeter, and it’s outputting 12V, which matches up with the label on the power supply, but what’s the odds that the power supply is faulty anyway? If not the power supply, any suggestions for what else I should try? Thanks.

Answer this question I have this problem too

Hi!

Oh my, it does sound like a firmware issue to me. An update which failed or the IC it self. Could also be the CPU/GPU.

But first let's test some thing!

What is already tried? I would try the basic things first.. You can try another power supply, just to be sure. It could be a lot of other components which failed inside the power supply. You could buy one and test it, if you have the same symptoms, then return the power supply and get a refund.

Does the Xbox turns on and stays on? Or is the white light turning off? If it stays on, then I don't think it's the Power Supply. You could also test with another SSD card, to see what happens. It should give you an error, but should boot..

If none of above worked, we need to check the motherboard...

If you are able to upload a video about this, then that would be great!

Another power supply is on the way and will get here in a few days, so I'll update when that turns up. The white light never turns on, even when pressed. Here's a video of the fans: https://youtu.be/xvEoABuEYHE

Thanks for the video! Okay, then hopefully it's the power supply which died, this could be the case for sure. In rare case, this can also be caused by the Power button board. But let's try the power supply first! Please keep us posted.

Replacement power supply doesn't seem to have fixed the issue unfortunately :(

Bummer... The easiest thing to try next is the power button board. If this didn't worked it's probably the firmware...
