Red light, no picture or sound

Hi,

Iv purchaced a gameboy that has power to the led but no picture or sound.

Iv tested the output from the battery and its outputting 6.4v.

Psu points are

Vcc 6.26v

Gnd 0

Minus -276mv

Plus -151mv

Now i no these outputs are wrong but im getting 6.24v on the board up by the switch when its turned on.

Strangly when i was checking the voltages i shorted the Vcc & ground together and the device started up, screen & volume was working and i was able to use the device, but when i turn it off it wont turn back on, would this suggest a short on the psu or on the board?

Any advice appreciated

@leeuk have you checked your on/off switch? What about corrosion on the board?

Theirs no corrosion anywhere on the board, the on off switch i cleaned in ipa and i get resistance cutting off / on when i flick the switch so i persume that would be ok?

Most of the time it's caused by the board with the screen on it. Could also be the cable which is damaged/broken. When you have an healthy gameboy, and you detach the cable, you get the same result.

Must be an component which is broken on the board with the screen (most likely)..

Perfect ill have a look around that screen board later, it was the fact that if i short the VCC and gnd for a second everything comes on an works fine which through me off and made me think it wasnt a cable issue... strange 🤦‍♂️

Alright! Yeah, it still could be the cable or the connector :(... Please check them both and run some tests to see what is failing... Good luck with the repair :)!

Iv tested the pins on the ribbon cable to the solder on the board, some of the pins on the board are showing continuity to more than 1 of the pads on the ribbom cable would this be a short on the ribbon?

by

Yeah, could be.. Do you have a replacement board? Just to test if it works? Please check the capacitors there too, could be that one of them failed giving weird values.

I dont have another board no :( everything looks ok what i can see, iv just inspected the main board not the screen and came across this resistor that has yellow coming out of both sides... i can see it on some others but alot more on this 1, is this common?
