getting poor to no connection as I go further from my wifi
only get good connection when I'm close to the wifi router but gets poor to no connection when i go further from it

It may be that there's a loose or faulty coax WiFi/BT antenna in the phone.
Here's a teardown video that may help, so that you can check to see if it is securely connected or not.
At 1:43 minutes into the video one end of the antenna is seen being disconnected from the systemboard. At 4:21 minutes the other end of the antenna is being disconnected from the charge port board.
If the antenna is faulty, search online for Huawei P Smart 2019 antenna to find suppliers that suit you best.
