The third revision of the classic Xbox Wireless Controller was released in November 2020, bundled with the Xbox Series X and Series S. This controller is backwards compatible with previous Xbox One consoles, and PCs.

Stick drift after replacing joystick module

I have replaced the right joystick module of an Xbox series controller as it had stick drift, but after replacing it the stick drift remains.

When replacing it I did notice some damage to the board so I’m now wondering if this is the cause, I’ve attached a photo so hopefully someone can let me know if that is likely the cause and if there’s anything that can be done.

Thanks, Luke

Hi Luke!

It look like that some traces are damaged.. this need to be recovered first. Did you already tried to clean it with alcohol? If it remains, then you do need to repair the traces and try again after!

If it’s still having drift after repairing the traces, then replace it again.

Hi Again! Thanks for getting back to me!

I have tried cleaning it with alcohol already and no luck. Fixing trace damage sounds like quite the ordeal, is it difficult? I’m quite new to soldering but happy to give it a try 😀

Hi! No problem!

Yes, it’s somewhat difficult. You need to scratch the trace with something sharp (or sand it) carefully, until you see the copper! Do this for both sides. Then solder a wire between it. So that a signal can come through again.

Maybe try adding a little bit more solder to those pins. Especially those bottom ones. Not to much tho just a tad
