My friends an515-57-7742 keeps crashing
the laptop is old and probably needs new thermal paste and some cleaning, i just want to know what to look out for when i'm opening it up.

from the looks of the tear down videos. most of these models look fairly straight forward.
if you do decide to tackle this. a few tips
take your time. if something isnt coming apart, theres usually a reason. maybe you missed a screw or theres a tab to lift \ remove.
if you find yourself getting frustrated. take a short break. get something to snack on and come back to it. i cant tell you how many times this will save you a broken component.
document your disassembly. take pictures. or take a sheet of paper and place the screws on the paper where you removed them. it is pretty defeating when you get it back together only to find a screw or part laying on your desk lol.
be careful where youre poking around when you remove the heatsink. ive tried prying up on one near the CPU and popped a capacitor off. thankfully it wasnt a cap that was needed to run and didnt have to, but did resolder it back in place. i guess this kinda goes back to taking your time :)

@cosmos90411 "keeps crashing" how? Have you run the Windows Event viewer and checked to see what (if any) events your System log shows?
