Background and Identification
Originally available only in Japan in 1997, the Prius is a popular hybrid electric car manufactured by Toyota. The third-generation of the Prius (model number XW30) sold from 2009 to 2015 with a redesigned body that reduced the coefficient of drag to a claimed figure of 0.25. The third-generation Prius used disc brakes for all four wheels and utilized plant-based bioplastics for the construction. The car was sold in North America with the option to add solar cells on the roof to power the air conditioning system.
The third-generation Prius has a 73 kW (98 hp) gasoline engine and a 20 kW (27 hp) electric motor. The car has a 1.3 kWh battery which charges when the car is coasting or when the battery is low and the computer routes power from the engine. Testing by the United States Environmental Protection Agency found that the Prius averaged 50 mpg (4.7 L/100 km) in highway and city driving (from Wikipedia).
All Prii from 2003 onward (yeah, “Prii“ is the official plural form of Prius as decided by public vote) have the words “Toyota“ and “Prius“ displayed on the back hatch. You can identify a Prius as a third generation by taking a peek at the front seats; if the center console and dashboard come together in an arch with a container hole below—as seen here—it was made between 2009 and 2015. Additionally, the front cover of the owner’s manual should have the exact year that your model was made, if you still have it!
