The Bear 33 Ventilator was created by Bear Medical Systems Inc, and released in the 1980s. Its part number is 50000-00833/4. There is a one-way valve within the ventilator which is used to allow the patient to breathe. When fully charged, the internal battery of the ventilator can provide 1 hour of power to the ventilator but this is not advised to be used for long periods of time. Rather, the use of an external battery or power supply is a more convenient and safe choice.
The Bear 33 is also equipped with features like its visible and audible low-pressure alarm, high pressure alarms (limits of both alarms can be adjusted), and an exhalation valve. The ventilator does not have a monitor to view the flow of oxygen to the patient or a positive and expiratory pressure valve, so these things need to be attached to the ventilator in a situation that they are needed.
The Bear ventilator has the ability to provide 3 modes of ventilation:
1. Control Ventilation
2. Assist-Control Ventilation
3. Synchronous Intermittent Mandatory Ventilation
It makes use of its tidal volume, rate, peak flow, and assist sensitivity to control and set each of these ventilation modes. The manufacturing of the Bear 33 ventilator has however, been discontinued.
