Background and Identification

OB-GYN or Obstetrics and Gynecology is a field of medicine that encompasses two subspecialties. The first is Obstetrics, the study of pregnancy, childbirth and the postpartum period. The second subspecialty is Gynecology, which is the study of the female reproductive system: the vagina, uterus, ovaries, and fallopian tubes. Typically the fields are combined and involve surgical training as well.

According to Healthline, 90% or OB-GYN’s are generalists however there are some areas they specialize in including, maternal fetal medicine, reproductive endocrinology and infertility and gynecologic oncology.

You may see an OB-GYN for abnormal bleeding, pelvic pain, endometriosis, along with many other things including pregnancy. They perform many procedures including dilation and curettage, biopsies, laser surgery, tubal ligation, to name a few.
