Background

A residential gateway, also known as a home gateway, is a network device that serves as the entry point for a home or small office network. It typically combines the functions of a router, a modem, a switch, and a wireless access point in a single device.

The router function allows multiple devices to connect to the internet through a single internet connection, while the modem function allows the device to communicate with the internet service provider (ISP). The switch function allows the device to connect wired devices to the network, while the wireless access point function allows wireless devices to connect to the network.

Residential gateways often come with a user-friendly interface that allows users to configure and manage their network settings. They also typically have built-in security features such as firewalls, encryption, and parental controls to help protect the network and its users from external threats.
