I am an undergraduate student at Cal State LA, majoring in civil engineering. My time at Cal State LA has given me extensive experience in engineering field work, collaborative design, and design prototyping. Some of my projects include designing a basic dam, performing a land survey, and building an underwater remote operated vehicle designed in part by me.
My interest in civil engineering began when I realized that the way that cities in the U.S. are designed disenfranchises many people, particularly those in poverty. Economic opportunity is one thing that the U.S. prides itself in. However, economic opportunity is directly tied to job opportunities, which are limited by a person's access to transportation. If you can't go to work you obviously can't do your job. The way our cities are designed makes any method of transportation besides a car extremely unviable. This forces people to spend thousands of dollars to buy and maintain their cars every year, which is extremely difficult for those in poverty. As such, I hope to change this by designing buildings to be more pedestrian and bike friendly to encourage other methods of transportation.
