Droid X won't turn on

No matter what you do, you can't get your Droid X to turn on.

Hold down power button

Before delving into the guts of your Droid X, hold down the power button located on the top of the phone. If this doesn't fix your problem read on.

Drained/bad battery

If your Droid X won't turn on, try plugging it in to the charging cable that came with the device. If your cable and phone are not damaged your display should turn on in a few moments. If this still does not solve your problem your power cable or battery could be the source of the problem. The cable is a standard micro usb cable and can be bought at many online vendors. If the cable is not the problem then you could have a bad or drained battery. You can find an original equipment manufacturer (OEM) Motorola BH5X battery at most online electronics vendors. To replace the battery follow this guide.

Hard reset

If your Droid X still won't turn on you may have to try a hard reset. Open the back panel of your Droid by sliding it down and pulling it out. Set the panel to the side. Now you will find a yellow flap in the upper left corner, where the panel used to be, that says 'pull.' To remove the battery, pull on the tab until the battery dislodges, and remove it completely. Once removed replace the battery in the case, making sure to put it in face up, and place the panel back on (follow steps in reverse). Now depress the power button for a few seconds. If the phone does not turn on and remains off read on.

Bad display

It is possible that it appears nothing is happening because the display is bad. If your phone is making sounds or seems fine, other than the display, it is possible the display is bad and must be replaced. To replace the screen, follow this guide.

Bad mother board

One of the worst things that can break in any electronic device is the motherboard. If something has gone wrong with the Droid X's motherboard the device will cease to function. Fortunately the Droid X's motherboard is easy to replace. The guide to replace the motherboard can be found here.

Droid X will start but becomes frozen

"Your phone starts properly but becomes frozen immediately or after little use. Your phone will not finish the boot process, shuts down unexpectedly, or enters a boot loop."

Factory data reset

If your Droid X freezes upon booting it or will not finish the boot sequence you may need to factory reset your Droid. WARNING: Factory resetting will delete and remove all files contained on the phone. Any files on the SD card will be saved. To factory reset your phone, first make sure the phone is off. Remove the back cover of the phone and pull out the battery. (See Hard reset for more details) Once the battery is removed, pull out the small card in the bottom left of the battery cavity. After the SD card is removed, replace the battery and case to their original positions. Now hold down the power button and the home key at once to boot the phone into recovery mode. Stop holding the buttons once you see a triangle with an exclamation point and an android graphic. Now hold down both volume buttons, located on the upper right of the phone. Once the menu is displayed, use the volume keys to navigate up and down the menu options. Find the Wipe data/Factory reset option and highlight it. Once highlighted depress the power button to select it. Now navigate to the option that says yes and again depress the power key. The phone will now reformat itself, which should take between 5 and 20 minutes. Once it has completed formatting, press the power key again to reboot.

Motorola Droid X screen is clearly broken or not functioning properly

Bad Display

Many electronics just break down over time, unfortunately this includes screens. If you have followed the guide for "Droid X will not turn on" and could not get the screen to turn on, it might be time to replace it. Step-by-step instructions for replacing a Droid X screen can be found here.

Shattered screen

Accidents happen, if your Droid X screen has been shattered follow the screen replacement guide here.

Semicircular black spots are visible when the screen is on

If there are dark circles on the screen, that means some of the Liquid crystals in the LCD have broken, This can only be fixed by replacing the screen. The screen replacement guide can be found here.

Screen does not respond to touch

If the screen will not respond to touch, and a hard reset does solve the problem, the digitizer might be to blame. To replace the digitizer follow this guide.

Water Damage

"Somehow you got water or a liquid on your device"

Minimizing damage

First thing you should do after getting the liquid on your Droid X is shut it off. Once the device is completely off remove the battery from the back. Refer to the battery removal section if you need help. Once the battery is removed, take out the SD card. To dry the device, either air dry or cover the phone in rice. Wait at least 24 hours, and for best results it is recommended to wait 48 hours before reassembling the device. Once your phone is totally dry and put back together, try turning it on. If it boots normally then the water may not have damaged anything, however if your device is unresponsive, there could be permanent damage.

Connections to Droid X do not function

"There are several inputs on the droid X, after a while something may obstruct one of the ports."

Headphone jack

If your headphones or speakers do not operate correctly when plugged into the Droid X, you may have an issue with the audio jack. First look down the headphone jack located on the top of the device, if you see any obstructions, obtain tweezers or a toothpick and carefully try and remove it. If there are no obstructions try to use the headphones on another device. If the headphones work on another device, you have a bad headphone jack.

Micro USB port

If the micro USB port does not function properly, first check for any obstructions in the port. If there are no obstructions, look for any bent parts. To resolve these issues, one will need to replace the micro USB port.

HDMI port

If the HDMI port does not function properly, first check for any obstructions in the port. If there are no obstructions, look for any bent parts. To resolve these issues, one will need to replace the HDMI port.

Camera does not function

"The camera displays a black or blank screen, or will not take pictures."

Camera

If the camera stops functioning, either it will not take pictures or displays only a blank screen then your camera could have a bad connection or be broken. To replace the camera, follow this guide.

Can we change it to Droid X will not turn on?

Sam Johnston - Reply

When you press the home and power keys and then both volume buttons, what do the different options do?

I opened my Droid X to clean the headphone contacts and in the process, a small silicone cover piece fell out. It’s about 1/2 inch long and 1/8 inch wide with a small hole for clearance for something. Any idea where it goes?
