2021 M1 MacBook Pro | Screen randomly goes black but still operational
I have a 2021 M1 MacBook Pro that I bought in February 2022. Recently, my screen randomly goes black, though I can still hear everything. The backlight seems on because I faintly see my applications. Adjusting brightness turns the screen from black to dark blue. In order to fix the issue, I have to close and reopen my laptop. I tested this on my external monitor and this issue never happens.
I also noticed this happens more frequently when I am in a meeting (Google Meet, Zoom) with my camera on but I don't know if this is directly correlated.
I tried the following things to fix it:
- Force restart
- SMC reset
- Diagnostics test (no issues)
- Safe mode
- Upgraded OS from Ventura to Sonoma
However, after all of this, the problem still persists. My warranty is expired since 1 year has passed so fixing it might be costly.
I am posting this to see if someone has had a similar issue and was able to fix it or can advise me on how I can move forward with this issue.
Is this a good question?
Do you know if the display suffered any sort of impact or possible damage? The symptoms sound like a failing or damaged display assembly, especially since it works fine on external monitor.

@zpl I haven't done anything to cause any damage to it. I usually use my laptop with my external monitor so I keep it in a vertical laptop stand. Just this week, I had to transport my laptop and use my laptop on its own but I had it stored in a laptop case.
