GPU Failiure only on the built in display?

I have a Macbook Air 2015 A1466 which has been here a while hiding in the corner which we have checked before for a display issue. Tech guy said the GPU had failed but there was a picture using an external display if I remember rightly, problem is that it don't power up anymore, so before I look into fixing the power up issue is it possible the GPU could only display externally and never again on it's built in display if it had failed?

Answer this question I have this problem too

Is this a good question?

There is only one GPU unit, it’s not possible for the GPU to fail applying an image on one display and not another if it were to fail.

While it can be confusing as the data path from the GPU does go through a bunch of switch logic before it gets to the target display which could be the failure as well as the LCD display and its support logic (T-CON). The GPU in its self won’t be where I would look if one display worked and another failed.

Yes, this is my thoughts also and is what triggered me to post this question. I shall try to resurrect the power supply and get this ones fan spinning again.
