Why does my keyboard add extra symbols/characters?

I have a 4? year old acer nitro AN517-51-56VF, and altough its not my main PC anymore, as ive built my own, id like to get my keyboard fixed as its got a unique problem that i cant find the solution to anywhere.

The keyboard, when i type on certain letters, adds a symbol or extra character before the letter ive pressed. For example, if i type the letter S, it comes up as +s, or if i type the letter O, it comes up as 9o.

I think it would probably need a replacement of the keyboard or something, but if anyone knows something better please let me know!

Answer this question I have this problem too

Is this a good question?

Hi @aaron__

If you haven't already done so, try uninstalling the keyboard drivers in Device Manager > Keyboard and once they're uninstalled, close all open windows and then restart the laptop in the normal manner.

During the following restart, Windows will reinstall the drivers again. Check if the problem is still there or not.

If the problem is still there then it's a hardware problem and replacing the keyboard is probably the way to go.

Oh,trust me, I've done alot more then that, I've tried changing the language, and keyboard layouts, I've tried deleting from the manager like you've suggested, I've tried new drivers and even a new windows install! But nothing works. So I am certain it is a hardware issue but I'm not sure what has gone wrong inside the laptop.

Then it's either the keyboard controller IC on the motherboard (if there is one and not that the controller is in the motherboard chipset) or it's the keyboard itself.

Assuming you've tried a USB keyboard attached to the laptop to see if that's alright?

Yeah, for the time that i was using this laptop, i was using an external usb keyboard, which worked fine, how would i get to find out if it has a keyboard controller and how can i fix it?

@aaron__

Find the motherboard's make and model number (printed on the board) and then search for the "(insert make and model number) schematics". They will show you what the keyboard connects to on the board.

Looking online the board may be a Compal LA-H501P. If so here's a link to the schematics

If your board is a different model hopefully you can find that as well.

wait, so do i have to open up the laptop to see the make and model number?
