Background

In 2006, Soundmatters released the first Bluetooth speaker, the Soundmatters foxL, ushering in a new era of wireless audio technology.

Bluetooth technology dates back to 1994, but the first ever consumer Bluetooth device, a hands-free mobile headset, was launched in 1999.

The name "Bluetooth" has a really fun story behind it: "Bluetooth" was intended to be a placeholder internal name for the project. The code name comes from Harold "Bluetooth" Gormsson, who was a 10th-century king of Denmark known for his dead "blue" tooth (or possibly his ravenous appetite for blueberries).

Identification

Most Bluetooth speakers will have the Bluetooth logo etched or printed on it somewhere. The Bluetooth logo is a combination of the Nordic runes H and B—Harold "Bluetooth" Gormsson's initials:
