GE Oven F8, F8X or F8XX Code

GE Oven F8, F8X or F8XX Code

This is a very straightforward error code. In most cases, you will end up replacing the main control board, aka Electronic Range Control/Electronic Oven Control (ERC/EOC). For those units displaying just the F8 code, see EEPROM Failure below.

Some newer GE ranges and ovens will display two or three character codes. The meaning of the F8X and F8XX series codes varies somewhat. You can look at the causes below and find your error code.

The manufacturer refers to each oven as a cavity (or, in some cases, a cell). The upper oven is Cavity 1, and the lower is Cavity 2

Disconnect Power

As with almost any error code, resetting the device is a good first step. For GE ovens, the easiest way to do this is to disconnect the power.

  • You may be able to reach the plug on gas or electric ranges or stoves. You can disconnect the power at the circuit breaker if it is difficult to reach.
  • Built-in ovens (like wall ovens) require you to disconnect power at the circuit breaker since they are usually hardwired and don't have a plug.
  • Leave the power disconnected for 5 minutes.
  • Reconnect the power and check to see if the error returns.
  • If it does, move on to the next item. If not, monitor the oven.

Recalling the Codes

Sometimes the oven (wall or range) will stop working, but no code will be displayed. There are a number of ways to check the memory for stored codes.

This page provides some help with this.

Once you retrieve the code (if necessary), if it's an F8 series code you can get more information below..

Causes

1

If you have this error code displayed, replace the ERC/EOC.

2

The X in the title above stands for the digits 0,1 or 2. Some of these errors may also have a decimal point.

Some ranges show both the F8 error and a more detailed two-digit error code (Higher end models). Most models with two-digit error codes show only the F82 code. Here is a list.

  • F80 — Upper oven error — Replace upper ERC/EOC
  • F81 — Lower oven error — Replace lower ERC/EOC
  • F82 — EEPROM Error or User Interface error— Replace ERC/EOC
3

With only a few exceptions, the 3-character error codes point to a bad main control board, aka Electronic Range Control/ Electronic Oven Control (ERC/EOC)—the exact meaning of the code changes with the date of manufacture.

Manufacture Date Before 2018.

  • F800 — Memory Error — replace the ERC/EOC
  • F810 — Memory Error — replace the ERC/EOC
  • F820 — EEPROM Error — replace the ERC/EOC

Manufacture Date Late 2018 and After

If a few of the codes appear, you might want to run some checks before replacing the main control board.

  • F800 — Self Clean without 2 Keys pressed —check for moisture at the control board; also check to see if the 2-key life LED is working — If there is no moisture and the 2-key board has its LED working, replace the ERC/EOC. Alternatively Self-Clean without 2-key input — Replace ERC
  • F801 — Self Clean without 2 Keys pressed —check for moisture at the control board; also check to see if the 2-key life LED is working — If there is no moisture and the 2-key board has its LED working, replace the ERC/EOC
  • F810 — Heating element relay error Upper Oven — Press Off/Cancel to reset — If persistent, replace ERC/EOC.
  • F811 — Heating element relay error Lower Oven — Press Off/Cancel to reset — If persistent, replace ERC/EOC
  • F820 — EEPROM Error — Replace ERC/EOC
  • F830 — Dual Self-Clean Detected — Press Off/Cancel to reset — If the error returns, replace ERC/EOC
  • F831 — Dual Self-Clean Detected — Press Off/Cancel to reset — If the error returns, replace ERC/EOC
  • F840 — ERC/EOC Failure (upper or single oven/range) — Press Off/Cancel to reset — If the error returns, replace ERC/EOC
  • F841 — Lower oven EOC Failure — replace lower oven EOC

On some models, an interface board (2-key board) has an LED that flashes to indicate proper function. This board is connected to the main control (EOC). If the LED isn't flashing, the problem may be in that board rather than the EOC.

Here is a service bulletin that deals with another check.
