Sounds like a busted capacitor based on the little available information but it might also be the PSU itself. Can you describe a bit more where this smoke comes from and under what circumstances? Just from powering it on or when you make it work on a load processes for example

We would realistically need a bit more information to give a better diagnosis. It can however sound like there is something broken inside the unit or the thermal paste for the CPU isn't working as intended anymore due to age. Here is a guide to open the unit to look for damage. Do you have pictures of the motherboard? What brand/model laptop are we talking about? Sounds like the circuitry for the screen. Adding images to an existing question

Have you tried clearing the cache? Update (03/25/24): Yeah. From recovery mode. Usually solves other software issues. If that doesn't work then I would probably open it up and look for any visible damage.

As you can see in this guide at step 8 it seems soldered on so the more likely answer would be desoldering it. Game Boy Advance Teardown

@kokouehlan Have you isolated whether it is a specific slot or the stick itself? Look for any damage around the RAM slot if you already have the unit open.
