Brand new heatsink laptop fan not working.

I've been trying to fix my old laptop for a while now. Recently, my new replacement fan came in for the MSI CX62 6QD, it is the same model from the same company (AAVID THERMALLOY PAAD06015SL). However, when I plug the fan in, it doesn't work. Turning on my computer makes the fan shake slightly, but then it doesn't move after that. I recently put a new hard drive into the laptop so there isn't any OS yet. Could that be the reason the fan isn't spinning yet?

However, my old laptop fan spins when I turn it on, so could it be a manufacturing error?

The new fan power connector is black instead of white for some reason, but they look identical apart from that.

Edit:

Here are the images of my old fan and my new fan:

On the left, is the new one and on the right is the old one.

Edit 2: Closeups of the white connector, front and back. (Sorry I wasn't exactly sure what you meant by this but I hope this is what you're looking for)

What voltage does the fan run at?

by

@dacelynn your voltage should be 5V and 0.5A

by

Oh sorry, I read it wrong, it is 0.55A and 5V, however, the new fan does not have information on an 'nxxx' number.

by

@dacelynn my concern is that you have either a wrong fan or a bad fan since you ssaid your old fan works in your computer. Post an image of your fans with your Question. Let's see what you got there. Adding images to an existing question

@dacelynn if your old fan still works and your new fan does not, the issue is with the fan. There is a possibility that it is wired differently or simply a dud. Return it and get another fan based on your fan/computer ( make sure you pay attention to the "nxxx" numbers as well. There are differences.

Update 25/4/2022

@dacelynn you’r original fan is a PAAD06015SL N318 and the wiring on your replacement fan is reversed. Replace your fan with the proper one or get the soldering iron out and reverse the power wiring on your replacement fan

It seems to be wired extremely similarly, if not the same. When I start my laptop, the fan seems to recieve at least a small amount of power as it shakes slightly, however, it doesn't start spinning.

by

It's probably a bad motor if anything. Esp if thew old one still works. If you have fan control program try setting the fan to full power if it struggles to move its a its a burnt out motor. Do the blades move if you manually move them? But I agree with dayclynn get a new fan

by

Yeah that seems like a good idea, I'm gonna do a few more things that jayeff mentioned but I'm definitely looking at returning it at this stage. It just sucks because it took a month to arrive.

Have you got a DMM (digital multimeter)?

If so connect it across the red and black wires and you should get a resistance measurement. It should be the same for both fans.

I find it interesting (odd?) that the red and yellow wires seem to be reversed where they enter the fan. The wire colour arrangement at the plug end seems to be identical.

The yellow wire is the sensor wire and if it were reversed with the battery wire (red wire) at the fan motor end, the fan wouldn't operate.

I am loathe to suggest that you gently peel off the label in the centre of the fan to see if you can see anything as this would void any warranty from the seller.

Send it back for a replacement

I will check the DMM out :)

Yeah, I also found the wires a bit strange, but I figured since they ended up in the same places it would be okay. I'll try everything in an hour or two because I don't have much desk space, so instead, I've been opening and closing the laptop casing many times and it's a bit tiring haha. I'll just leave the fans outside next time and I'll get back to you.

by

So I realised, I'm not really sure how to use the DMM on the fan. The tip definitely isn't small enough to reach anywhere on the red or black wires. I'm definitely going to look for a return.

@dacelynn

Set the meter to read Ohms - 200 Ohms scale

Then try placing the meter probe tips on the small piece of metal that is showing on the face of the plug in line with with each wire.

You can see it in the image for the white plug that you posted so hopefully it is the same for the black plug on the new fan.

If not if you have 2 dressmaker's pins (they look like these) insert them into the plug for the red and black wires and then place the meter probes on the pins. Do not let them touch each other and don't force them into the plug if they're too big.

Do this for both fans.

by

@jayeff I'm not sure if sewing pins would work, but I tried them with no readings. I think that the battery for my DMM is out of charge, so I won't be able to check until next morning (In probably around 12 hours). If sewing pins don't work then I probably won't be able to get a reading for the resistance.

I've tried to contact the seller to get a refund or exchange. I guess I'll just see how that goes.

@dacelynn

If you short out the meter probes together and get a 0.00 Ohms reading then the meter is OK.

Wanted close ups of both connectors and the wire connected to each pin...but it's ok just make sure it matches the diagram.

Man that's a long wait.

If anything take some good old wire strippers and some electrical tape orwire caps and cut the end off ur old fan and put em on your new fan.

I am a bit hesitant to do so because I'm looking for a refund or exchange right now. But I just realised I forgot to respond to another comment you made about the motor. - When I manually spin the fan, it turns fine (I'm not exactly sure what that means in terms of motors) but now that I think about it, compared to my old fan, there seems to be a bit more resistance as it stops spinning a bit sooner and there seems to be some bounce back.

by

I was just asking so I can get a clearer picture in my head to see if it was a mechanical problem or wiring one. Anyways the resistance is normal. Sometimes the blades get stuck and you have no spin at all.

I personally don't trust online vendors especially when buying spare parts like a fan

And I only suggested the wire cutting because these vendors take forever in sending a replacement sometimes especially if they require you to send the old one back first. It's best to just buy another fan first and wait for the refund rather than exchanging. Waiting for pc components suck especially when theres a hight chane it'll be DOA

If you dont mind me asking, why are you getting a fan from an online vendor? I find going to a pc repair place and having them test it for you buy it better than going online.

by

@zer0b1ade Right, I see your point, and I'm glad that the resistance is normal. oldturkey03 said that the wiring from the fan itself is incorrect and that makes a lot of sense. But I don't really have wire strippers or soldering irons or anything so I can't really fix it myself. However, they did let me keep the fan, so I think I might be able to try something on it later. Ummm, with going into a PC repair place, I attempted to go to 2 different, but they all said that they wouldn't be able to find the parts properly unless I provided them with the new parts. So basically they just offered to open the laptop and put in the fan. I live in a somewhat rural area in Australia, so there aren't really many technology places I can go to.

by

@zer0b1ade The website I got it from looked really sketchy, but I ordered with Paypal and they delivered somewhat close to their estimated delivery date. I guess it isn't actually that close (10 days after what they said) but it was probably Aramex's fault because their delivery is awful. Anyways, I got it from: http://www.laptop-cooling-fans.com/cx62-...

(Sorry had to split this up into two parts because it was too long haha)
